The Supplement Formulation Process, Explained

Formulation is the stretch of work that turns a product idea into something a factory can actually make — the same way, batch after batch. It is not a single event. It runs through a defined sequence of stages, and at each one you hand over something and get something back.

This article walks that sequence stage by stage. If you are still deciding whether you need formulation at all, read when you need formulation before a manufacturing quote first. This is the companion piece: it assumes you need formulation and explains what happens once it starts.

One boundary to set up front. "Formulation at MHS means manufacturing readiness — not open-ended R&D." Every stage below has a defined scope and defined deliverables. MHS is not a research lab exploring ideas indefinitely — the whole process is pointed at one outcome: a formula that can be produced repeatably at commercial scale.

The formulation process at a glance

Six stages take you from a concept to a manufacturing quote:

Stage 1 — Concept and target actives

The starting point is your product direction: what the product is, the actives you want in it, the format (powder, liquid, sachet, gummy, or homeopathic), and who it is for.

At this stage MHS confirms the brief and routes you to the right pathway. A new product with a clear, low-complexity concept and no existing formulation starts at Simple Formulation ($2,500 + GST). A product that targets a vulnerable population, or that carries higher technical or regulatory complexity, starts at Advanced Formulation ($5,000 + GST) — more on that in Stage 2.

You do not need every detail resolved to begin, but the more direction you bring, the faster this stage moves. Clarity upfront means speed later.

Stage 2 — Feasibility and food-type scope check

Before development work begins, the concept is checked against two boundaries.

The first is regulatory scope. MHS manufactures food-type supplements under FSANZ food standards — not TGA-listed therapeutic goods. If your intended claims or product design would require the therapeutic-goods pathway, that is a different route, and this is the stage where that gets identified rather than after you have paid for development.

The second is the target audience. Products targeting children, elderly individuals, pregnant women, or breastfeeding women require Advanced Formulation. So do products with complex requirements or higher technical risk. This is a regulatory and safety requirement, not an optional upgrade or an upsell — Simple Formulation is not sufficient for these products. Identifying it here, at the start, avoids beginning on Simple Formulation and having to escalate partway through, which adds cost and time.

Stage 3 — Benchtop formulation and iteration

This is the development work most people picture when they hear "formulation." A food technologist develops the formula against your specifications and works through flavour development, taking it through iterations at benchtop scale — small trial quantities, not a production run.

The output is a worked formula and a flavour direction you can assess. Note the scope boundary: benchtop development is part of the Simple and Advanced Formulation service, but scaled sample production is a separate add-on — it is not automatically included. If you want a larger pilot batch of the finished product before committing to a full run, that is a distinct, paid step.

Stage 4 — Shelf-life and stability assessment

A formula that works on the benchtop still has to hold up over time and in its packaging. Shelf-life and stability optimisation is carried out by a food technologist as part of the service.

Packaging is assessed alongside stability, because format and packaging affect how a product holds. Packaging selection and development, matched to your product format, is included in every pathway. The result of this stage is a formula that has been assessed for how it behaves in the real conditions it will sit in — not just how it performs the day it is mixed.

Stage 5 — Specification lock and production-ready documentation

Once the formula is settled, it is locked into a specification and the production documentation is generated. This is the deliverable that separates manufacturing readiness from a good recipe: production-ready documentation that lets the product be made the same way, repeatably, at commercial scale.

On completion, the IP transfers fully to your brand. The formula and its documentation are yours. This is the point at which your product stops being a concept and becomes a defined, ownable, manufacturable specification.

Stage 6 — Manufacturing quote

With a locked spec and complete documentation, a production run can finally be priced. The service includes a manufacturing pricing assessment with scalability planning — costing the run and mapping how the economics change as volume grows.

MHS develops for low-volume commercial production, typically up to a few thousand units per month. It is a boutique contract manufacturer, not a large-volume commodity facility. A first local production run typically takes around two months once the formulation is complete and the documentation is finalised.

How long does the whole process take?

The formulation stages themselves run on estimated durations:

  • Simple Formulation — estimated 6–8 weeks
  • Advanced Formulation — estimated 10–14 weeks

These are estimates. Actual timelines depend on product complexity, ingredient availability, the number of iteration rounds, and the current production schedule. Formulation is followed by manufacturing scheduling, which carries its own lead time on top of the development window.
