Forge · An MHS R&D tool

Forge — R&D materials for founders who want to experiment

Forge puts real, specification-grade raw materials in your hands so you can weigh, mix and taste your idea yourself — before a brief is written or a production run is booked. It runs alongside our formulation and manufacturing pathways, not in place of them.

What it is

A hands-on way to find out what your product wants to be

Some founders work an idea out on paper. Others need to hold it, mix it, and taste it before they can say what they actually want. Forge is built for the second group.

A Forge kit is a set of pre-weighed, individually labelled raw materials for a single product category — the same specification-grade inputs we use in commercial production. You do the experimenting: ratios, texture, sweetness, how it mixes, what it tastes like at 6am. What you end up with isn't a formula. It's a founder who knows what they want and can explain why.

Why we made it

Most founders reach a manufacturer with a concept and a long list of unanswered questions. Answering those questions early, with your own hands, costs very little. Answering them late — after a formula is locked, artwork is printed, or a batch is made — is where projects stall and money disappears.

Forge is a tool we give founders, not a product we sell them instead of doing the work. Every serious project still goes through formal development before it goes into production.
Forge

Prototype first. Manufacture when you're ready.

Forge ships you real raw materials for one category — labelled, pre-weighed, no finished formula included. It is deliberately incomplete, and what's missing is on purpose: professional flavour optimisation, compliance review, stability and shelf life, batch documentation, and the tolerances that only commercial equipment gives you.

That work is ours. The experimenting is yours.

What Forge is not

Positioning it honestly is the only way it stays useful. Forge does one job, and it isn't any of these three.

Not a replacement for formulation
Different outcome entirely
  • Formulation is a structured technical service run by our food technologists
  • It ends in a production-ready formula, documentation and full IP transfer
  • Forge ends in understanding — which makes formulation faster, not unnecessary
See the formulation pathways →
Not a cheaper sample
Different job, not a discount
  • A sample is made by our team, to a defined brief, on our equipment
  • It exists to be evaluated as a product and to inform a production run
  • A Forge kit is materials you work with yourself — it proves nothing about manufacturability
How samples work at MHS →
Not a white-label finished good
Nothing here is saleable
  • No compliant label, no permitted claims, no shelf-life data
  • Not made to a finished-product specification, and not intended for resale
  • If you want a product to sell, that's manufacturing — and that starts with us

How Forge works alongside formal development

Forge is the front of the process, not a detour around it. Everything you learn on the bench carries into the work that follows.

1
Experiment with Forge
Your hands, your kitchen bench
  • Order a kit for your category
  • Weigh, mix, taste, adjust
  • Find out what you actually want
2
Bring us what you learned
An informed brief beats a guess
  • Direction, constraints, sensory goals
  • What you ruled out and why
  • Target market, quantity and timing
What to prepare →
3
Formal development
Where it becomes real
  • Professional formulation and flavour work
  • Shelf life, stability, packaging selection
  • Production-ready documentation and IP transfer
Formulation services →
4
Manufacture at scale
First run → repeatable system
  • Confirmed MOQ and unit cost
  • Ingredient and packaging supply
  • Production, then optional 3PL

Not sure which end to start at?

The honest answer depends on how settled your idea is. Both doors lead to the same place.

  • Still exploring? Start with Forge and come back when you know what you want.
  • Know what you want but not how to make it? Start with formulation.
  • Formula settled and documented? Skip both and ask for a manufacturing quote.

If you're unsure, tell us the product, the market and roughly when you want to launch — we'll point you at the right one, including telling you when Forge isn't worth your money.
